According to Joule's heating effect, the equation for the heat energy produced in the conductor is

H=I2Rt, where H is heat energy produced, I is the current in the circuit, t is the time for which current flows a circuit and R is the resistance.

As the resistance increases, the heat energy in the conductor also increases.

Nichrome wire is generally used as a heating element in heating appliances because it has the following features:

1. It offers a very large resistance. So a large amount of electric energy is converted into a large amount of heat energy.
2. It has a high melting point such that it can be heated till red hot without melting.
3. Even at high temperatures, it does not get oxidized easily.
